dear friends,

do any of you have suggestions for a really good, in-depth reference for medicinal herb use? id really prefer something printed & not online, but im interested in online references as well.

thank you,

i made a really good carrot soup the other day. & matthew brought home leeks & potatoes so i can make potato-leek soup this week. there is something so comforting, so welcoming, about a bowl of soup.

when nikki, rebecca & i lived in california, most of our *family dinners* were soup based. i remember weeks where we didnt really eat much or buy any food until it was family dinner day, & then we'd splurge & make so much food, unsure of just how many people were going to show up. sometimes it was thirty people, sometimes it was five. i used to steal away to my room after a couple of hours, if it was a large gathering. one or two people would join me & we'd have our own little time. i guess ive just always liked things to be a little more intimate than large crowds, large circles allow.

there are things i want to do today, but none of it is as important as just Being with matthew & noah. holding hands, talking half-asleep in bed, those are moments to be held.

now we will count to twelve
and we will all keep still.

this one time upon the earth,
let's not speak any language,
let's stop for one second,
and not move our arms so much.

it would be a delicious moment,
without hurry, without locomotives,
all of us would be together
in a sudden uneasiness.

the fishermen in the cold sea
would do no harm to the whales
and the peasant gathering salt
would look at his torn hands.

those who prepare green wars,
wars of gas, wars of fire,
victories without survivors,
would put on clean clothing
and would walk alongside their brothers
in the shade, without doing a thing.

what i want shouldn't be confused
with final inactivity:
life alone is what matters,
i want nothing to do with death.

if we weren't unanimous
about keeping our lives so much in motion,
if we could do nothing for once,
perhaps a great silence would
interrupt this sadness,
this never understanding ourselves
and threatening ourselves with death,
perhaps the earth is teaching us
when everything seems to be dead
and then everything is alive.

now i will count to twelve
and you keep quiet and i'll go.

pablo neruda.
